How did you first get into videography and what do you love most about it?
M: I first got into videography (or as I prefer to call it, filmmaking) when I was in high school. My friend had a YouTube channel and I acted in his comedy skits. I loved it and started my own YouTube channel. This was my first taste of being behind the camera. I had no training or teaching, but I taught myself everything I knew about cameras and editing software. Film school at UNCW was the first time anyone else taught me about filmmaking, which was a huge blessing.
My favorite thing about filmmaking is experimentation. Not saying that everything I make is “experimental” as a whole, but within a seemingly standard format, I love to experiment in many of the creative decisions that are made. It’s risky, but it makes the process more exciting, and the product more interesting.
You get stranded on an island and can have access to one TV show to keep you company. What is it?
M: It has to be Seinfeld, without a doubt.
Have there been any challenges you’ve encountered here in learning the programming / coding side of web design?
M: The biggest challenge I’ve found with HTML and CSS is that once you think you “got it,” you’re likely to hit a roadblock. The website isn’t doing what you tell it to, and you have to figure out why. The truth is, you’ll never stop hitting roadblocks. Half of knowing this language seems to be diagnosing the problem and knowing the solution. It forces you to think logically. Sometimes, even “medically.”
What has been your favorite place you’ve visited and why?
M: My favorite place to visit is Charleston, SC. To me its the perfect mix of southern charm, colonial spirit, beautiful architecture, and most of all, delicious food.
You are part-time with us here at Proclaim. What other kinds of work do you do?
M: Most of my time is actually spent in ministry with Christ Community Church here in Wilmington. I am currently a year-long intern in their Ministry Apprentice Program. At the moment, I am heavily involved in the high school ministry and I love every minute of it. I plan on pursuing full-time ministry and hope to be a pastor in a local church one day.
If you had the chance to spend the day with any one person, alive or deceased, who would you choose and what would you want to do?
M: I would spend a day in the studio with Daft Punk. They are by far my favorite musical act and I would love to see their creative process! I know they are actually two people, but I hope it still counts!
