What is your role here at Proclaim Interactive?
S: They tell me I’m the “glue” around the marketing department! As the director, I coordinate our incredibly intelligent crew of five marketing specialists. I help the team hone their skills and think of new, effective ways to make our clients succeed online. I’m also the one who just logistically organizes the projects and communicates with our clients.
How has your role evolved since you started and what have been your favorite elements of that role?
S: I’ve been friends with Spence and Tara Hackney for many years; one night while our kids all played together at Mike’s Farm, we were chatting about all sorts of topics when Spence suddenly said, “So you know a little bit about social media?” That’s where it all started! I’ve done each of the jobs in the marketing department, but since I’m really best at just telling people what to do, they eventually made me the director.
How many pets do you have?
S: There’s Linus, the 20-pound mammoth cat, and Penny, the 8-pounder (2 of which are all hair). To make life more interesting, we also have 2 gerbils: YinYang and Brownie. For some reason, watching gerbil hyperactivity is super soothing to me. I have no idea why. Now we’re considering adding a Boston Terrier puppy to the mix. Apparently, I’m running a zoo…
You’re from the west coast. Is there any California left in you or are you a true “southerner” now?
S: I just took a Southern dialect test and fared pretty poorly at only 44% Dixie. So I guess it’s harder to get the California out of me than I thought. But I have started saying “might could” and “fixin,” so that’s got to count for something, right? I love the South, and I’m fortunate to get to raise my daughters here along with my husband. Both of our parents live here as well now, so we are lucky, to say the least.
The digital marketing industry is constantly changing. What’s your favorite way to stay up-to-date with trends, algorithms, etc.?
S: I love reading blogs by industry leaders – it helps me formulate the story when I look into client data. My favorites are Moz, Neil Patel, and Jeff Bullas.
What has been your favorite vacation you’ve ever taken?
S: Wow, hardest question so far. We’ve traveled quite a bit, so it’s hard to pick just one. We recently took our girls to Riviera Maya, Mexico for our 20th anniversary, and it was amazing – so that’s my favorite for now. I keep getting email marketing and Google Ads remarketing from that resort, so I’m seriously thinking about booking another trip this year. Their marketing is working on me!
